What a healthy camp would actually change

Health is the plan again. That is not a plan. But here is what it buys if it holds through October, and what it does not.

The Sixers will open training camp on Sept. 29 with a familiar sentence: if everyone is healthy, this team can compete with anyone. The sentence is true. It is also not a plan, because health is not something a team decides.

What a healthy camp buys

It buys continuity. A full camp with the top eight players on the floor together means the offense enters October with its reads rehearsed rather than improvised, which was the difference between the fast starts and the slow ones last season.

What it does not buy

It does not buy depth. The ninth and tenth spots on the roster are unproven whether the stars are healthy or not, and a healthy camp only postpones the day those players matter. The rookie class is part of that question.

So take the sentence for what it is: a prerequisite, not a strategy. The strategy shows up in how the minutes are distributed when everybody is available, and that is the thing worth watching in October.
