The rotation for the final month, in order of trust

Five starters, ranked by how much you would like to see them in a one-game playoff.

Trust is the only stat that matters in September. Here is the rotation ranked by it, with the understanding that trust and results are not the same thing and that one bad start does not move anybody down.

  1. The ace. Nothing to add; the number one seed is his to pitch.

  2. The veteran. Not the best stuff on the staff, but the best track record when the calendar turns.

  3. The breakout. Elite through July, human since. The next three starts decide where he pitches in October.

  4. The innings eater. Reliable for five, adventurous after that. The bullpen plan is built around him.

  5. The wild card. Could win a playoff game or lose one by the third inning. Nobody, including him, knows which.

The order will not change how the games are pitched in September. It will change how they are arranged in October, and that is worth thinking about now.
