A bench that finally has a purpose

For the first time in years the last five roster spots know what they are for.

For most of the last three seasons, the Phillies bench was a waiting room: a place for veterans between injuries and for prospects between demotions. Nobody had a job. Everybody had a role that changed weekly.

This September the bench has a purpose, and the purpose is simple. Two players exist to pinch hit against left-handed relievers. One exists to run. One exists to catch on day games after night games. One exists to play three infield positions without embarrassment.

A bench with jobs is a bench that can be managed. A bench with roles is a bench that has to be explained.

That clarity is why the late innings have felt different since the trade deadline. The manager is not searching for an answer; he is choosing one. In October, the difference between searching and choosing is a series.
