Samsung Suede Sch-R710 (Cricket Wireless): Samsung Suede Sch-R710 The Cricket Phone

Cricket

What makes the 3G-capable Samsung Suede for Cricket Wireless such an interesting candy bar phone isn’t its angular design or any hardware component. Instead, it’s the music operating system inside called Muve Music (pronounced “move”), and the attached payment plan. A monthly fee gets you unlimited access to music downloads, ringtones, ringback tones, and music identification, so long as your pay your bills. In addition, you also get the unlimited talk, text, e-mail, and Web browsing of Cricket’s other monthly plans.

It’s noteworthy that Muve Music, a first-of-its-kind offering, was Cricket’s brainchild, not Samsung’s. Seldom do we see such novel, big-picture ideas from carriers at all, never mind one cooked up by a regional prepaid operator known for its budget plans and phones. We were so impressed with the concept when we first saw it ahead of CES that we nominated it in a Best of CES category. Yet, after spending time with the Suede after Muve’s launch, it’s clear that the Muve Music software is a little out of tune, at least for now. For starters, the software company Cricket hired to build the OS needed more time to iron out kinks, which delayed the rollout. It’s also slow, it’s a little clunky, and it’s currently available on only one handset.

Design
Thanks to its angled silver trim and sharp chin point, the Samsung Suede looks like a wedge waiting to be hammered into soft ground. We’re not at all seduced by the top-heavy look, but the design is otherwise benign, with a black face and back, and rounded edges. There’s a neat, light-reflecting black-on-black design on the back cover that reminds us of a cross between Tetris and “The Matrix.” The handset’s dimensions–4.4 inches tall by 2.2 inches wide by 0.5 inch thick–make it a fairly petite phone without it being minute.

The Samsung Suede takes steps forward with its call quality and music integration, but one step back with an outdated phone interface.

The Suede’s 3-inch capacitive screen is small by most touch-screen standards, but it’s about right for the phone’s size. However, it makes menus small enough to cause a squint or a neck-crane, and the virtual keyboard is shrunken in portrait mode. The screen’s 200×400-pixel resolution fits this type of phone, and looks appropriately sharp and bright indoors. Like most screens, it’s dim and hard to see in direct sunlight.

The Suede’s interface has a split personality. On one hand there’s Cricket’s unique Muve Music portal, which you access by pressing the music note button (more on this below). On the other, there’s the tired TouchWiz 2.0 OS that handles the address book, the dialer, e-mail, applications, and everything else. This version of TouchWiz, if you’re unfamiliar with it, has slide-out widget trays for transferring widgets on and off of three home screens. The entire look and feel are usable, but also slow and outdated, especially compared with more recent visual designs.

Below the screen are two touch-sensitive buttons for speakerphone and navigating back. There are also three hardware buttons, one each for Talk and End, and a larger central button embossed with a music note. This key is the gateway to the Muve Music experience.

The phone’s right spine houses the camera shutter button and another button that doubles as a lock key and voice command trigger. Up top is the 3.5-millimeter headset jack, and on the left are the Micro-USB charging port and the volume rocker. On the back is the 3-megapixel camera with camcorder and beneath the back cover is the microSD card slot. It comes preinstalled with a 4GB card that devotes 3GB to Muve Music (up to 3,000 songs) and leaves you 1GB for your own devices. If that’s not enough, you’ll soon be able to purchase an 8GB version. The slot itself can handle up to 16GB of external memory, but if you use a standard microSD card, you won’t be able to use Muve.

Muve Music
There are plenty of ways to describe Muve Music, but we think the best is as an unlimited music rental program. We say “rental,” because the music comes from one source (it’s approved by the major U.S. labels, by the way), it isn’t transferable onto a computer or any other device, and you lose access if you stop paying your monthly bill. At no point do you ever truly “own” the songs.

When you enter Muve, you’re greeted by a black backdrop that showcases five app icons. There’s the My Music library of tunes, the Get Music download store, and the My DJ app, which aggregates genre-based playlists that you can download to the phone. There’s also a version of Shazam’s music identifier that’s tailored to Muve, and the Get Social app for interacting with other users around your musical preferences. On a smaller navigation strip, you’ll see an inbox for viewing “shouts” messages broadcast by other Muve Music users, and Help and Settings options (the settings control your Muve Music profile picture and sync settings).

Navigating the music portion of the OS is mostly straightforward, but there are rough edges. Not every arrow or button is clearly labeled, which leads to some trial and error. To exit the music mode, for example, you press the End button, and not the music key that you press to get in. You can press the music button to jump to the currently playing song from wherever you are, but we’d also like to see a Now Playing ticker in the software.

It takes too many clicks to get into a playlist, and it’s difficult to edit or add to the playlist on the fly without interrupting the playback. It’s almost too easy to delete songs from Muve as a whole, and to erase entire playlists without the phone asking for confirmation. Strangely, though, deleting individual tracks from a playlist is much more difficult.

None of this is helped by the Suede’s relatively smaller display size, which makes onscreen controls tinier and harder to see and press. We wish that My DJ streamed songs over 3G in addition to downloading tracks. Muve’s player also emits an annoying, metallic beep every time it moves on to a new song. A fade out would be much better, or at least the ability to turn the beep off.

The service itself, however, is immersive enough to push past the usability snags, particularly if you’re part of Cricket’s music-hungry clientele. The music libraries are well-stocked with hits and recommended tracks, and the My DJ portal helps grab tunes by a range of genres. Muve adds all the album art and automatically organizes tracks in your library. You can shuffle songs and view links from the player to some of the other Muve features. Also, you’re able to create a ringtone or ringback tone from many songs, and the software lets you set the start point and duration before playing back a preview before you create the tone. Since tunes are all-inclusive, there’s no penalty for experimentation or for aural gluttony.

Although Muve operates separately from the TouchWiz OS, incoming calls will pause the player and give you a chance to pick up where you left off (wait a few seconds for a dialog box to appear.)

Many sports have had products geared specifically toward women for years, but until now, the tennis industry has concentrated more on changing cosmetics than enhancing technology for women’s equipment. Not anymore! With Head’s new Women’s Series, women will benefit more than ever from innovative technology, products and design – everything competitive players expect from Head. Head interviewed thousands of women around the world to find out what they really want in a tennis racquet. That way, before producing a single tennis racquet for this new line Head knew exactly what female tennis players expected: lightweight power, comfort and maneuverability. The Head Air Flow line, endorsed by Steffi Graf, is designed to be a “function over fashion” line of tennis racquets. This series is meant to suit the performance-oriented needs of a female player. Air Flow tennis racquets, featuring Head’s Metallix technology, combine a specially designed matrix of carbon fibers and a new crystalline metal alloy to make it one of the lightest and strongest new rackets. The anatomical structure of the female hand is different from men’s and so the design of the tennis racket should reflect those differences. Positioned in the redesigned shaft section, Metallix reduces overall weight and improves the response and power of the racquet. The HEAD’s unique ergonomic grip is designed for a woman’s hand- thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom reducing twist and torque for more comfort and less strain on the arm. The result is superior handling and enhanced ball control.

The new DNX Attiva line by Volkl caters to those women tennis players with an aggressive and powerful game – just ask Dominika Cibulkova! These anatomically-designed tennis rackets will help you achieve your top performance. These new designs are light-weight, properly balanced, combined with additional performance and comfort features like: Catapult effect, Big Grommet, Sensor Plus Handle System and of course…the revolutionary DNX material. The Volkl Catapult technology allows greater string movement which provides increased comfort and a larger sweetspot with every swing of the racket. For supreme comfort, the Sensor Plus Handle System supplies excellent vibration and shock absorbance. DNX is a new unique material structure featuring high-strength micro tube construction that is 25 times stronger than regular carbon fibers. It is an entirely new material class whose properties represent the fourth dimension of carbon. DNX has strength characteristics that have never been reached before, a true break-through in material development, now exclusively available in the new DNX Racquet Series by Völkl Tennis. This line of tennis rackets was created especially for today’s women tennis players providing a selection of light, comfortable and easy to maneuver racquets. DNX Attiva provides the versatile strength you need to increase your on court potential.

Developed specifically with the female player in mind, the Dunlop M-Fil Lady has been enhanced with the Impact Shock Isolation System in the tennis racquet handle which dampens frame vibration and helps protect the arm from tennis elbow. Dunlop Hydramax Comfort grip features an exceptional tack feel for players who demand outstanding performance and maximum control. Dunlop has included its Multifilament Construction process at the 3 & 9 o’clock positions to further enhance the stability of this women’s tennis racquet. M-Fil (Multi Filament) is a technology, developed by Dunlop, that incorporates a unique patented 3D braiding process using a combination of three materials : Carbon, S-fiber and Magnesium. The added beam stiffness from the Multifilament Construction enhances the size of the sweetspot and helps prevent the tennis racquet from twisting on off center shots. These element are combined into the hitting zone at the racquet head to enhance the touch and feel of the racquet where and when you need it most – at the moment of ball contact. Unlike conventional racquets, the M-Fil fibers are layered in three directions, with the thrid fibre aligned at zero degrees. Additionally, Hotmelt technology produces a unique molten graphite skin which is layered over the entire racquet frame. This makes the racket immensely strong, durable and responsive, producing an incredible surge of 30% more “heat refined power” than standard graphite racquets. This enhances natural power play, producing greater shot accuracy and giving a more consistent touch and feel throughout the frame. This tennis racket is ideal for the competitor looking for a combination of control, comfort and power in a light-weight racquet.

Symptoms of Sports Hernia & Athletic Pubalgia

Athletics

A sports hernia also known as athletic pubalgia, Gilmore’s groin, and slap shot gut, is an uncommon, but often missed cause of groin pain in high level athletes. It is poorly understood and poorly defined in the medical community. It is also very difficult to identify based on history and physical exam of an athlete with groin pain. The name sports hernia is a misnomer as well because there is no discernable hernia (or protrusion of abdominal cavity contents) present in this condition.

Sports hernia is a diagnosis almost exclusively of very high level male athletes. It is a common diagnosis in athletes with chronic longstanding groin pain that does not respond to a very long (often years) course of non-operative treatment. Typically athletes involved in repetitive twisting sports such as ice hockey, soccer, Australian rules football, and tennis. Recent well known athletes such as Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles, Tomas Holmström of the Detroit Red Wings and Jeremy Shockey of the New Orlean’s Saints have all had surgery to repair a sports hernia.

Hockey player’s syndrome otherwise known as “slap shot gut” is a variant of a sports hernia unique to high level ice hockey athletes. It is due to repetitive twisting motions of the torso common in hockey such as with taking a slap shot. The result is a tearing over time of the covering (fascia) lining the lower abdominal oblique muscles. It is most often seen on the side opposite the player’s forehand slap shot. There may also be an associated inguinal nerve irritation. This may explain why the pain seen in hockey player’s syndrome often travels to the scrotal region. The treatment involves a repair similar to that in many sports hernias.

This is in contradistinction to a typical hernia where there is a protrusion of abdominal contents such as fatty tissue or bowel through a well-defined defect in the inguinal canal of the groin. Despite this, the name sports hernia has persisted because many of the surgical treatments are similar to that of a typical hernia.

]]>

Repetitive twisting and shear forces encountered during high level athletics can lead to injury of the lower abdominal wall. This may be exacerbated by the typical strong thigh adductors (muscles that bring the thighs closer together) compared with often weaker lower abdominal muscles.

Athletes typically complain of a longstanding history of pain in the inguinal (groin) region. They often complain simply that their performance has deteriorated below a satisfactory level. Often the pain is not present during periods of inactivity, rest or periods away from athletic involvement. However, symptoms classically reappear with return to the athletic activities responsible for the injury in the first place. The pain may travel, or radiate, from the groin into other areas like the testes, lower abdominal musculature and the inner thigh region. The pain is often exacerbated by coughing or sneezing as well as by athletic movements like sit-ups and kicking motions.

On physical examination, there may be groin pain to palpation in the region of various structures along the wall of the lower abdomen. These may include anatomic regions like the inguinal ring and canal as well as the pubic symphysis (central fusion point of the 2 halves of the pelvis in the front/center of the pelvic region). There is however no classic inguinal hernia detectable on exam as there is no defect in the inguinal wall and no intra-abdominal contents that herniated through. Patients will have pain with a resisted abdominal contraction such as with a sit-up. This may be worsened by doing so with the thighs squeezed together (adduction).

There are many possible causes of groin pain in athletes. Sports hernia is a rarely confirmed diagnosis, and therefore it is extremely important to be sure that other conditions are not the source of an athlete’s symptoms. Some conditions that can mimic a sports hernia include:

● Pulled Groin Muscle (Hip Flexor/Adductor Strain)
● Hip impingement
● Inguinal hernia
● Osteitis pubis (inflammation of the pubic symphysis: joint connecting the 2 halves of the pelvis)
● Stress fracture
● Snapping hip
● Labral tears
● Osteoarthritis
● Nerve entrapment
● Avulsion fractures in teenagers and children
● Non-orthopaedic causes of pain such as those involving the genitourinary system

Special emphasis should be given to core stabilization exercises as well as countering any imbalance between the various hip, pelvis and thigh musculature. An evaluation by a highly specialized physical therapist is necessary to help the athlete along with their rehab program and identify and treat these imbalances. A good example to improve this imbalance is Hip Abductor Stength

For more information on treatment including several other instructional core strength exercises as well as hip strengthening videos, please click the following link. Surgical information is also provided in this link

Sports Hernia & Athletic Pubalgia

About 90% of athletes who have surgery for a sports hernia are able to return to competition at the same level or higher to where they were prior to their injury. The timing of return to competition for laparoscopic surgery is typically within 6 weeks while for open surgery it is usually a few months to as long as 6 months.

Create Collapsible Fabric Boxes for Quick Storage

Home storage is always in short supply. Often, people resort to using cardboard boxes or plastic cartons to store their items in closets, the attic, or cellars. But many items have to be stored out in the open. A great way of creating quick and attractive storage solutions is by crafting collapsible fabric boxes.

Materials Needed

1. Fabric: stiff varieties are preferred
2. Bias tape or binding
3. Stiff interfacing
4. Thin quilt batting

How to Create the Fabric Boxes

These collapsible fabric storage boxes are fashioned from one large base and four sides. They do not have lids. Each piece of the fabric box is essentially a sandwich of fabric, thin quilt batting, and stiff interfacing. You could use thin cardboard in place of the interfacing if you do not care about the ability to throw them into the washing machine.

For each piece, cut two rectangles of your fabric, two of the quilt batting, and one of the interfacing. Then, put the right sides of the fabric together with all the other materials in the middle. Stitch three sides of each piece and then turn it right side out so the fabric covers the batting and interfacing. Stitch the remaining sides neatly closed. You will now have five rectangular sides of the collapsible fabric storage box.

The next step is to sew the bottom edge of each side to the edge of the base of the fabric box. Be sure to stitch just the fabric so that the sides can still fold up and down. After this is complete, stitch bias tape to the vertical edges of the box sides, leaving an extra length at the top. Use these lengths of bias tape to tie bows to keep the box sides up when in use.

There are different ways to finish your boxes. You can just leave the box as-is and use it that way. An alternate idea is to edge each of the fabric box sides with the bias tape and tie them together at each corner. That way, you can create different size boxes for all of your needs.

How to Use and Store the Fabric Boxes

These collapsible fabric boxes are ideal for storage of small items. To use them, simply fold up the short sides. Tie the bias tape into neat bows or knots at the corners.

If you no longer need the storage box, you can easily untie the bias tape and fold the fabric box flat for storing in a closet or on a shelf. These collapsible fabric boxes are machine washable as long as the fabric you use is as well.

These collapsible fabric boxes are both easy to create and easy to use. Attractive and durable, they are a perfect answer to your small storage needs.

Awards For Athletes

Athletics

With the athletics season almost at a close, the athletes of the world could be forgiven for taking a rest. However it’s not just on the track and field that athletes find themselves competing against each other all year round. Every year a select few athletes are awarded gongs for their achievements in their sport. The IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) hold their prestigious World Athletics Gala annually, which rewards outstanding global athletic achievements, through a number of awards.

The highlight of this event is the announcement of the Male and Female World Athletes of the Year. This year the IAAF has given the public the unique chance of helping to select the three finalists for both the Female & Male Athlete of the Year 2010. Great Britain only has one contender and that is World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis. The 24 year old won the world indoor pentathlon and heptathlon gold at the European Championships this year.

Jessica Ennis was also shortlisted for the Female European Athlete of the Year. These awards have already been announced, with Jessica coming second behind Blanka Vlasic, a high jumper from Croatia (who she also happens to be up against for the World Athlete award). French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre was named European Male Athlete of the Year.

Other Award ceremonies taking place are the Aviva Athletics Awards. These will be held at Loughborough University, which itself is a nationally and internationally recognised for its high level of teaching and research in the sport and exercise sciences.

Young emerging talent also gets a nod. The European Athletics Rising Star Awards recognises the future male and female stars in the world of European athletics. It has proved to be a good indicator as Jessica Ennis won the title back in 2007. This year saw French triple jumper Teddy Tamgho and Croatian discus thrower Sandra Perkovic take the honours, so they will be two to watch out for in the coming seasons.

On the whole, it’s been a fairly good year for British athletics. Great Britain & N.I’s medal haul included 41 medals at the Commonwealth Games, 19 medals at the European Championships and 4 medals at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. So with less than 2 years to go until the curtain goes up on the 2012 Olympics, things look to be on track for our Britain & N.I athletes….let’s just hope the construction of all the venues are too!
