Bike Helmet Safety for Parents

Once spring comes around children are excited to get out into the backyard and take on the local sidewalks with their bicycles. A fun activity, cycling can also be quite dangerous if the head is not protected. Even a low impact fall can cause damage that can be prevented with a helmet. Helmets can be relatively cheaply on sites like www.eurekacyclesports.co.uk.

Parents can use these tips when outfitting children with bike helmets:

Know When to Put on a Helmet

Parents should be aware of the sports and activities where a helmet is recommended. Bike helmets should be worn by children taking part in cycling and other activities that involve ‘wheeled’ toys, but also while riding in a bike trailer on the back of the bike. Helmets for infants are available through specialty stores offering helmets in smaller sizes to accommodate the small size required, featuring designs that are infant and bike-trailer friendly.

Promoting safety and awareness for the activities where the helmet should be worn can help to promote safety in the household while these activities are being completed. Parents that promote helmet use from a young age create children that are safety-aware.

Get the Right Size

Bike helmets that are too large or too small are going to be ineffective for the child. Measuring the head of the child and following the guidelines of the size chart accompanying the helmet can protect the child’s skull. Inserts included with the helmet are designed to create a cushioned interior more than to adjust the size of the helmets.

At the beginning of each season in addition to inspecting the helmet for damage, parents should inspect the helmet in respect to its size to determine it if still provides an adequate fit for the child.

Replace Helmets that Have Been Damaged

Helmets that have cracks, even minor surface cracks, should be replaced. These helmets are no longer going to offer a sufficient level of protection. Inspect helmets annually for cracks and other damage that can compromise the safety of the helmet.

Place the Inserts Correctly

Children’s helmets, especially helmets that are designed for very young children, are designed with inserts to create a comfortable fit. These inserts are attached to the interior of the helmet with Velcro and should be matched to the shape of the helmet. The inserts should not be doubled up and should be used for that bit of extra protection for the child wearing the helmet.

Safety while using bike helmets should be taught early and taught often. Skateboarding, bicycling, using wheeled scooters and roller skating are all instances where the child should be taught bicycle helmet safety. Placing emphasis that the helmet should be worn before the activities are begun can help to ensure bicycle safety throughout the childhood and beyond.

The United States has many phenomenal fishing areas throughout the lower 48. These fishing areas offer a huge variety of species and fishing styles. No matter what kind of fishing you enjoy you will find it. Here are a few of the top fishing spots the U.S. has to offer.

American Hoop Dreams Never Die

To someone from another country, the American sports landscape might be a little bit confusing. What the rest of the world calls “football” is known as “soccer” in the United States. Soccer is actually pretty widely played in the U.S., especially by young people. As a spectator sport, however, it’s what corporations would call a “niche market.” It gets more confusing because, while Americans often complain that soccer/football is a bit boring to watch, baseball, aka “America’s pastime,” consists largely of waiting. Meanwhile American football (which is just “football” here, leading to occasional confusion as you can imagine) is a violent and exciting but also rather arcane game with many complicated rules.

No wonder then that basketball hoops are becoming a bigger export than they’ve ever been. A game so deceptively simple anyone can figure out the object almost immediately (scoring points by throwing balls into basketball hoops), basketball has a long and fascinating history and it is definitely one of the sports which America most obsesses over. Just visit almost any American city with a college, or without one, during “March madness,” when universities vie for the top spot. If that American city happens to have casinos with sports books, you’ll see even more madness. The play-offs and finals for the championship of the National Basketball Association (NBA) are nearly as “mad.”

Basketball is definitely an exciting game to play and the good news is that all you really need is a hard surface of some kind, say a gymnasium floor or vacant outdoor parking area, regulation basketballs and regulation basketball hoops. The rules can be learned immediately online but the principle is impossible to miss. You won’t be any closer to playing like a Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant than you would be to a David Beckham, but since when has that been the point? Have fun.
